Nurse educator practicum runs on a different map. Schools of nursing and community college nursing programs are spread across the state, from the metros out to Salina, Hutchinson, Hays, Garden City, and Pittsburg, and any of them can host a student teaching under an experienced faculty member. Hospital staff-development and clinical-education departments add more options in the same towns. These practicums carry far fewer hours than NP tracks, so a single well-placed site often covers the whole requirement.
Public and community health placements sit with county health departments and community health centers, which reach into rural Kansas more evenly than the specialty analytics teams do.
If you are on an NP track, your practicum is direct patient care, and Kansas splits into a familiar pattern. Wichita and Sedgwick County, the Kansas side of the Kansas City metro, and the Topeka to Lawrence corridor hold most of the clinical volume, and most of the competing students, since nursing, medical, and physician assistant programs all draw on the same offices. Manhattan is a smaller fourth pocket.
Outside the metros the math flips. Salina, Hutchinson, Emporia, Hays, Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, and Pittsburg have working primary care and far fewer students chasing it, across a network of Critical Access Hospitals, rural health clinics, and federally qualified health centers. Preceptors there are often willing, and the cost is yours, in drive time and sometimes lodging. Psychiatric-mental health and pediatric hours are the ones that most often stall people, because dedicated sites cluster in the metros while smaller towns fold both into family practice.

For an NP student the effect is narrow but real: an experienced Kansas NP can precept you on their own authority, with no physician layered in to satisfy state law, which is often the arrangement that stalls placements in reduced and restricted states. Physicians still precept plenty of NP students here as well. For the non-NP tracks, practice authority barely matters, because an educator, informaticist, or nurse executive mentors you in their role rather than as a prescriber.
Do not assume an hour count. For NP tracks, the 2022 National Task Force standards recommend a minimum of 750 direct patient care hours per track, and certification eligibility requires at least 500 faculty-supervised hours; accredited programs commonly publish somewhere between 500 and 750 or more, and many sit below 750. Non-NP tracks carry far fewer, commonly in the range of roughly 100 to 200 practicum hours. Simulation does not count toward direct-care totals. The slow step is rarely the preceptor saying yes. It is the affiliation agreement between your school and the site, which independent Kansas clinics and smaller organizations may never have signed with your university. Raise it early, since legal review can run weeks. A site already hosting students from your program usually has one on file.
